Smith machine bent-over row

The Smith machine bent-over row is an upper-body exercise targeting the muscles of the back, particularly the lats (latissimus dorsi). This movement can be programmed in low reps for strength or higher reps for muscle and strength endurance. It is often performed for moderate to high reps, such as 8-12 reps per set or more, as part of an upper-body or back-focused workout.

Benefits

  1. Adds size and strength to the lats and upper back
  2. Can easily set the safeties to a specific height
  3. The bar moves on a track making it easier to get into position and control

Smith machine bent-over row Instructions

Smith machine bent-over row muscle diagram
  1. Set the barbell attached to the smith machine to a height that is about 2 inches below your knees.
  2. Bend your knees slightly and bring your torso forward, by bending at the waist, while keeping the back straight until it is almost parallel to the floor. Tip: Make sure that you keep the head up.
  3. Now grasp the barbell using an overhand (pronated) grip and unlock it from the smith machine rack. Then let it hang directly in front of you as your arms hang extended perpendicular to the floor and your torso. This is your starting position.
  4. While keeping the torso stationary, lift the barbell as you breathe out, keeping the elbows close to the body and not doing any force with the forearm other than holding the weights. On the top contracted position, squeeze the back muscles and hold for a second.
  5. Slowly lower the weight again to the starting position as you inhale.
  6. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.

Caution:

  • This exercise is not recommended for people with back problems. A Low Pulley Row is a better choice for people with back issues.
  • Also, just like with the bent knee deadlift, if you have a healthy back, ensure perfect form and never slouch the back forward as this can cause back injury.
  • Be cautious as well with the weight used; in case of doubt, use less weight rather than more.

Variations: You can perform the same exercise using a supinated (palms facing you) grip. You can also use barbells and dumbbells.

Similar to the Barbell Bent Over Row but with a Smith Machine bar instead.
